Hever Castle is committed to become more environmentally friendly and energy efficient and is in the process of replacing old equipment with more energy efficient solutions.
An application for a grant from Defra has been submitted for a Biomas Heating System that would heat the Castle, The Tudor Village and potentially 18 other estate cottages, flats, as well as the Moat Restaurant and offices.
To drive the system, most of the wood in the form of thinnings, would come from our own woodland and from other local woodlands in the area. All well managed woods benefit from thinning and usually the disturbance to wildlife is minimal and actually benefits from such work. Biomas energy is considered to be carbon neutral, to learn more about sustainable clean efficient fuel visit www.woodenergyltd.co.uk
We have commissioned a feasibility study on the possibility of installing a hydro power station on the outflow from the lake.
To help lower CO2 emissions with the transportation of food supplies to our restaurants we use, whenever possible, local small independent family run companies from Kent, Sussex and Surrey and at present this sources 80% of the supply.
