RHS LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE IN THE principles of plant growth, propagation & development (1 YEAR – 14 CREDITS)

This horticulture course, RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation and Development qualification is can be taken on its own or with the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance (14 credits), to gain the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture (total 28 credits, which equates to 280 learning hours).  Alternatively, both of these can be taken with the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture (15 credits) to gain the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles & Practices of Horticulture (total 43 credits, equates to 430 learning hours).

COURSE CONTENT

This qualification provides knowledge of the scientific principles which underpin horticultural practices.

The course consists of four units which cover the following topics:

  1. Plant classification, structure and function
  2. Plant nutrition and the properties and management of soils and growing media
  3. Maintaining plant health through understanding pest, disease and weed lifecycles
  4. Principles and practices of plant propagation in horticulture

Each unit is assessed by a written examination in February and June.

COURSE Schedule

This is a one-year course. The course is taught 4 hours a week over 28 weeks with one visit and two further examination dates, which are set by the RHS in February and June.

The course follows the academic timetable, comprising three separate terms with half term breaks within each.

Monday 10:00 – 14:00* (28 weeks x 4 hour classes, 1 x visit, 2 x exam days) 

Autumn Term: 13 September – 6 December 2021 excluding ½ term (12 weeks)
Spring Term: 10 January – 28 March 2022 excluding ½ term (10 weeks & exam)
Examination date: 7 February 2022
Summer Term: 25 April – 13 June 2022 excluding ½ term & bank holiday (6 weeks & exam)
Examination date: TBC 2022

Tuition Fee: £550 to include exam fee and an annual membership to Hever Castle & Gardens for the duration of the course.

CANCELLATION POLICY

A cancellation fee of £195 will apply if you withdraw two weeks before the start of the course. After this time if you withdraw from the course there is no reimbursement of fees after the start of the course.

Our four tutors have taught horticulture, including the RHS courses, for many years and have worked in various sectors of the horticultural industry. They are all passionate about plants and love to share their enthusiasm with others. RHS LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA IN THE PRINCIPLES & PRACTICES OF HORTICULTURE (43 CREDITS)

RHS Level 2 theory-based qualifications:

RHS Level 2 practical-based qualification:

Those who successfully complete all the necessary units for the two level 2 theory-based qualifications and the practical-based qualification will gain the RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles of Horticulture (total 43 credits, which equates to 430 learning hours).

The RHS Qualification Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture is well recognised within the industry. Students who achieve it are well placed to progress onto further courses, or into employment. The course is ideal for the dedicated amateur gardener who wishes to extend his or her knowledge and achieve a nationally recognised qualification. It is ideal for beginners, or for those with some experience. The Level 2 qualification is the basis to move further on to the RHS Level 3 Qualifications.

Achievement on this course is assessed with nationally set written examinations and assessments. We recommend that students take the examinations. 

There are no prerequisites for entry to the qualification other than a love of horticulture and a dedication to sit the examinations.
