A First Listen to Songs from Anne Boleyn: The Musical

June 10 2025 | What's on

A powerful new song, “YOU”, from the eagerly anticipated Anne Boleyn: The Musical, set to premiere at Hever Castle & Gardens 2 – 30 August, has been released. This offers a glimpse into what audiences can expect this summer.

As the world premiere of Anne Boleyn: The Musical approaches, the show’s producers, Historalia, have provided a preview of one of the show’s songs, “YOU.” This ballad is performed by West End star Emily Lane, who takes on the role of Anne Boleyn.

“YOU” is a solo sung by Anne Boleyn to her newborn daughter, Elizabeth, in Act II, Scene 2 of the musical. Accompanied by musical director Matthew Malone on piano, this acoustic version is captured by sound engineer Pierpaolo Demarchi and performed by Emily Lane.

The song captures a moment of heartbreak and hope, as Anne faces political pressure. The lyrics, “You were meant to be a boy,” hint at Anne’s true feelings and the immense strain she faced in the hope of having a son. Yet, what stands out from this song is a mother’s love for her child.

Insights from the Creative Team

Writer Rebecca Night explains the inspiration behind the piece: “We were thinking about the political and personal pressure, after a seven-year relationship, a break from Rome, a new religion – to produce a son. In a world where it was rarely considered possible for a woman to be a leader. Yet, despite all of the external noise, what happens in that moment when a mother, or a parent, first meets their child? You are changed forever. Your priorities shift instantly, and love becomes the guiding force.”

Simon de Merode, producer for Historalia, shared his thoughts on this milestone: “After ten years of bringing history to life in Belgium’s historic houses, I’m filled with pride and awe hearing ‘YOU’ in English and staging it in one of the UK’s most famous castles.”

Anne Boleyn: The Musical is set to premiere at Hever Castle & Gardens from 2 – 30 August. With songs like “YOU,” audiences will see Anne Boleyn’s story brought to life.
