Award-winning Cider at Hever Castle Wignac

Award-winning cider with a rich history is now on sale in the Hever Shop.

Wignac cider, the brainchild of Eliane Astor and her family, recently went on sale in the UK.

Mrs Astor explained: “My great grandmother used to make cider at home when we were kids. So for my mum’s 60th birthday we bought her some apple trees. My brothers and I decided to make it a business and bring back the orchards into the Champagne-Ardennes region of France.”

Both the natural cider and the rose cider are 100% natural with no added sugar. The natural cider is made with 65% of different varieties of cider apples and with 35% of eating apples. The rose cider combines a tasty blend of 88% pure apple juice with 12% pure grape juice.

The beverages won awards at the International Cider Challenge 2018 – a silver medal for the rose cider in the flavoured cider category and a bronze for the natural cider in the new world section.

The Hever Shop is one of only a few places in the UK where you can purchase the cider to take away as all the other outlets are in restaurants. Wignac Cider is also available in Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Eliane, a Belgian princess, married Charles Astor, in May 2017 at Hever Castle. The Astor family previously owned Hever Castle from 1903 to 1983. Eliane said: “To me Hever will always be special. It was the first place Charlie took me to visit and my father in law grew up here. It has this homely feeling to it.”

• Wignac cider is on sale now in the Hever Shop priced at £6.95 for a large bottle and £3.75 for a small bottle. ID will be required when purchasing both beverages in the shop.
