We’re very excited to announce that the Castle is undergoing a transformation to tell the story of the Tudors! A permanent exhibition in the Long Gallery, guest curated by renowned historian David Starkey, will depict the saga from the Wars of the Roses to the Reformation.
The Long Gallery, created in 1506 by Thomas Boleyn, will be totally transformed. Through over 18 paintings hung in dynastic order, the tale of the Tudors will be told. Therefore, it offers a chance to concentrate on Tudor history and the sequence of events that changed Britain’s history forever.
Consequently, many changes taking place will restore the Long Gallery to how it would have been in Tudor times. The ornate plasterwork of the Long Gallery ceiling has been painted an off-white to give the effect of lime wash. Whilst full-length drapes will be reinstalled at the stained glass windows at each end of the 98ft room.
As a result, the exhibition will see a new take on history and its presentation throughout the Castle. Artefacts currently being exhibited in the Long Gallery will be redistributed.
David Starkey will also provide an insightful commentary on the exhibition in the multimedia guide. Previously, Starkey has stated that “Hever Castle has one of the best collection of Tudor portraits after the National Portrait Gallery”.
The new exhibition will open in the autumn, keep up to date with all the latest information on our website.
Please note that we may have to close the Long Gallery on some days to undertake this work.
