Hever Castle has a rich and varied history dating back more than 700 years. In our garden guide book uncover the compelling story behind how one of the world’s greatest gardens was created here at Hever.

‘Astor’s Garden Legacy’ brings the rich heritage of the Hever Castle gardens to life. Now you can take the history home with you.

Garden guide book

William Waldorf Astor purchased Hever Castle in 1903. The Castle was in disrepair and the landscape was untouched. Over 1000 men worked on the grand design between 1904 and 1908. At the time, Astor was regarded as the richest man in America and no expense was spared. Work on the gardens reputedly cost almost £1 million, that’s equivalent to £110 million in 2016.

Astor’s grand design brought trees from across the country and artefacts from across the world to create gardens which broke the mould. Learn about the antique statuary that can be found in the Italian Garden, some of which are over 2000 years old, and the explosive story behind the Pompeiian Wall.

Find out how we’re working to keep the gardens award-winning. Since Broadland Properties Ltd acquired Hever Castle & Gardens in 1983, a new injection of life has been installed into the Estate. Gardens which were once lost or neglected have been restored to their pre-war former glory. Even today, the gardeners are creating new areas for the public to enjoy for years to come.
