Hot Weather Protocols for Jousting

Feel alive in the summertime
July 11 2025 | What's on

The exciting action of jousting will go ahead as planned at Hever Castle this weekend, despite the hot weather forecast.

We are committed to ensuring the welfare of both the horses and riders, and The Knights of Royal England, the professional team behind the thrilling displays, have robust hot weather (28-30°C and above) protocols in place. These have been developed in line with guidance from the RSPCA and the British Horse Society.

Spanish (Iberian) horses, used in the jousting tournaments, are well suited to warmer temperatures thanks to their natural adaptations. However, extra measures are always taken when the temperature rises. These include:

The welfare of our visitors is also important to us. Around the grounds, you’ll find plenty of shady spots to rest and relax, as well as water bottle refill points and refreshments to help you and your family stay cool during your visit. Please be aware that shade in the jousting arena is limited, so you may wish to bring a parasol or umbrella for extra comfort while enjoying the show.

With these measures in place, we look forward to welcoming you for a weekend of spectacular jousting, set against the stunning backdrop of Hever Castle.
