How to stay cool during your visit to Hever Castle

Attractions, Garden, What's on

As the heatwave continues across the UK we are all looking for ways to stay cool.

If you are planning a visit to Hever Castle there are plenty of shady picnic spots and we have lots of ideas to keep the whole family from the kids to the dogs hydrated and refreshed:

The Water Maze:

The perfect way to stay cool.

Situated on Sixteen Acre Island the Water Maze is a maze with a difference that consists of a series of concentric stepping stone walkways sitting over water; at intervals the stones tilt when stood on and hidden water jets spring into action to soak the unwary visitor. The aim is usually to reach the stone grotto in the centre without getting wet, though in this weather a bit of a shower might be preferable! This is a popular spot with young and old alike. Children under 5 need to be accompanied by an adult and shoes need to be worn.

Top tip: Bring a towel and a change of clothes!

Food and drink:

Our Prosecco bar on the spectacular stone Loggia overlooking the Lake offers some welcome shade plus the opportunity to enjoy a chilled glass of bubbly or an alcoholic or fruity ice pop.

Or choose from the myriad of tempting Solley’s ice cream flavours from traditional chocolate and vanilla to the more exotic lemon meringue and salted caramel at one of our many kiosks across the site. The perfect way to stay cool on a hot day!

Both our Restaurants have water bottle filling stations and there are taps around the grounds too. Refillable bottles can be purchased in the Moat Restaurant and Hever Shop.

Picnic spots and shady walks:

Bringing a picnic and wondering the best place to lay your blanket and ensure everyone stays cool? We recommend underneath the copper beech on Horseshoe Lawn or underneath one of the many trees lining Anne Boleyn’s Walk.

Shady places for a stroll include the Fern Bank that runs under the Golden Stairs and Sunday Walk. Or head out to the Japanese Tea House overlooking the lake for a cool spot with a spectacular view.

Grottos:

The grottos on Pergola Walk are a much-loved feature of the Italian Garden. With the gentle trickle of water over the moss-covered rocks, a stroll along the water feature is one of the most tranquil and cool places to be in the gardens.

Hever Shop:

Visit the air conditioned Hever Shop to stay cool and browse the range of gifts and local produce.

Dogs:

Drinking bowls for dogs are located at the Moat and Pavilion Restaurants.
