While most people are watching the Olympics from the comfort of their living rooms, Hever Castle Golf Club member Barbara O’Neill is right in the thick of the action, volunteering at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

For Barbara, a veteran volunteer at major sporting events, Paris is another milestone in her extensive volunteer journey. Barbara has been involved in numerous prestigious events, including the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, as well as the Commonwealth Games and several other international competitions.

Barbara’s Olympic adventure began on July 8 when she arrived in Paris for the Soft Opening of the Games. Despite a delayed Eurostar, she quickly adapted to the bustling schedule.

“The first few days were about settling in, putting up signs, and getting familiar with the four conference rooms, each named after a French river,” Barbara shared. “As a Team Leader with experience from London 2012, I guided the team through the preparations, drawing on my previous knowledge.”

Barbara described her days as fast-paced and intense, managing multiple press conferences and coordinating between various teams. One memorable day saw her managing the conference room for Team Australia, Team America, and the International Olympic Committee. “It was exhausting but exhilarating. By the end of the day, I was running between rooms, ensuring everything went smoothly.”

Barbara’s role included escorting athletes, managing media interactions, and even handling the microphones during question and answer sessions. She recounted a particularly hectic morning with the American basketball team: “It was packed with over 300 media personnel. It felt like herding cats, but we managed to keep things organised.”

Despite the hectic schedule, Barbara found moments of excitement and joy. Meeting athletes like Tom Daley and Novak Djokovic added a special touch to her volunteer experience. “Chatting with Tom Daley was a highlight. He’s as friendly in person as he appears on TV,” she said.

As the Olympics progressed, Barbara witnessed the emotional contrast between different teams. She was particularly moved by the Ukrainian team’s press conference, where athletes shared their stories of perseverance amid the ongoing war.

Reflecting on her volunteer work, Barbara emphasised the unique opportunities and the hard work involved. “Volunteering at major sporting events is not just about the excitement; it’s about dedication and passion. It’s demanding but incredibly rewarding.”

When Barbara isn’t volunteering at international sports events, she enjoys playing golf at Hever Castle, often seen on the Prince’s course. With a handicap of 10.6, she relishes the challenge and camaraderie the club offers.

Barbara’s dedication to volunteering and her love for sports make her a cherished member of Hever Castle Golf Club. Her experiences at the 2024 Paris Olympics add another remarkable chapter to her impressive journey.

Barbara encourages others to consider volunteering at major sporting events. “It’s an incredible experience, but it requires commitment. You need to express interest well in advance and go through the selection process. The training is rigorous, but the rewards are worth it.”

Hever Castle Golf Club is proud to support Barbara and celebrates her contributions to the sporting community. We look forward to hearing more about her adventures and are inspired by her dedication and passion.
