Golf has been a part of Hever Castle’s history since the 1920s, when John Jacob Astor V commissioned a private 9-hole course for his personal enjoyment. This course was located on the grounds where today’s Championship Course lies, just north of the Hever lakes.
For the Astor family, golf was more than a pastime, it was a valuable tool for entertaining friends, family, and business associates. J.J. Astor, who served as Chairman of The Times newspaper from 1922 to 1959, frequently hosted grand events at Hever Castle. These gatherings became a highlight for The Times staff, drawing over 3,000 attendees for a day of recreation and camaraderie. Alongside dancing on the green, golf was the centrepiece of these events, reflecting the sport’s significance on the estate.
The heritage of those vibrant times is preserved in the Castle’s ground floor, where visitors can view photos and memorabilia related to the Astor family. A notable highlight is a record of a golf match held on 16 June 1928, between members of The Times staff and the official debate staff of the Houses of Parliament, as documented in The Times House Journal (August 1928, p. 303).
Adding to this rich history is a fascinating film clip from the 1920s, which belongs to the current Lord Astor. The footage features John Jacob Astor V and his friends strolling through the Castle grounds en route to the golf course. Watch the video below.
Sadly, the original course was abandoned during the Second World War as part of the war effort. However, in 1992, a new chapter began with the creation of today’s Championship Course. This was followed by the opening of the Princes 9-Hole Course in 1998.
Now recognised as one of the finest golf courses in Kent, the Hever Castle Golf Club offers an exceptional experience for both seasoned golfers and beginners. Built to the highest specifications, it continues to uphold the legacy of excellence and enjoyment that began nearly a century ago.
