field of cloth of gold: June 2020 – CANCELLED
June 2020 marks 500 years since King Henry VIII and King Francis I of France hosted an elaborate festival near Calais to improve relations between the two rivals.
The meeting lasted from 7-24 June 1520 and was one of the most impressive, lavish meetings ever to be held between the two kings.
Present at this famous event were the Boleyn family, who lived here at Hever Castle. Thomas Boleyn, one of King Henry’s most dependable diplomats, was entrusted by Henry with proposing this famous meeting to King Francis.
To celebrate, each weekend in June 2020 you will be able to take part in an event centred around the Field of Cloth of Gold including Tudor dance demonstrations, lessons, food stalls and more.
6 & 7 June: Tudor Banqueting & Craft
The first weekend will be themed around food and craft with demonstrations of leather work, blacksmith and pewter casting as well as examples of the dishes of the day.
13 & 14 June: Entertainment for the King
During the second weekend there will be demonstrations of Tudor dancing, culminating in a final ‘masquerade ball’ in a traditional Tudor tent. There will also be the chance for your little ones to make their own mask as part of a free craft activity, falconry displays, entertainment from the King’s fool and traditional music. If you have your own mask or Tudor dress we’d love to see you come in costume!
20 & 21 June: Beer and Food Festival for Father’s Day with Jousting
During Father’s Day Weekend there will be armour to try on, combat demonstrations with a chance to try and defeat your dad, plus a beer and food festival and jousting.
27 & 28 June: A Call to Arms
The final weekend of the Field of Cloth of Gold celebrations will be combat themed with Tudor wrestling, weapons and fighting techniques, archery and surgery on the Battlefield demonstrations. Henry VIII will also be providing a Royal audience to visitors.
