Hever In Bloom 26 june – 1 July
Hever Castle’s annual garden event showcases the glorious award winning gardens at the height of their summer beauty. Enjoy one of the finest displays of more than 4,000 roses in Kent, the Garden of England.
During the free guided tour of the Garden, you will be offered the opportunity to learn the basic principles of distilling rose oil, enjoy a tasting of various rose inspired recipes and peruse the rose collection and buy a locally sourced rose flavoured gin at the shop.
The tour has been extended to include the newly planted border beside the theatre containing damask roses grown by poet Emily Dickinson in her own garden at ‘The Homestead’ in Amherst, Massachusetts. The inspiration for this area of the garden came from Hever’s owners, the Guthrie family, and Mrs Guthrie’s love of Emily Dickinson’s poetry.
Three hundred ’Love struck’ roses have been planted in the formal rose garden; this beautiful scarlet rose was named ‘rose of the year’ for 2018 at last year’s RHS Hampton Court. The team have also planted 100 new Caron Keating roses to commemorate her life.
As well as the guided tour, we are running daily floristry workshops where you will be able to make a flower crown with the guidance of Emma, an ex-gardener at Hever turned florist. (Full details are below.)
Make sure to head inside the Castle to see the stunning English floral displays themed around the scent of roses.
Garden tours: 11:30am
Starting from the Castle Forecourt you will be led by one of Hever Castle’s gardening team on a tour lasting approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. The tour finishes near the green houses and the courtyard shop, where many of the plants in the grounds are available for sale. At the end of the tour there will be a brief talk on rose oil, plus the chance to try it. There will also be the opportunity to sample rose flavoured cupcakes in the Pavilion Restaurant and sample rose flavoured gin in the Courtyard Shop. At the end of the tour, you will also be able to view the Emily Dickinson inspired Garden.
Daily floristry workshops: 2:00pm
If you’ve ever been tempted to try your hand at floristry, the daily workshops during Hever in Bloom are just the place to start (workshops take approximately 45 minutes – 1 hour). You will be able to create a flower crown to take home that has been designed by Emma, an ex-gardener at Hever turned florist. She will guide you through creating your arrangement whilst providing tips and giving advice. All materials will be provided, please book at the information centre in advance.
