RHS LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE IN PRACTICAL HORTICULTURE (1 YEAR – 15 CREDITS)

This RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture qualification can be taken on its own or with the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance (14 credits), and the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation and Development (14 credits) to gain the RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture (total 43 credits, which equates to 430 learning hours).

COURSE CONTENT

A practical-based qualification to develop the essential skills needed to work in horticulture or to further develop your interest. The qualification consists of 6 mandatory units and 1 optional unit. Credits for a unit will be awarded to a candidate once the candidate has reached the level of competency for all the specified tasks.  Each unit will be assessed by means of a range of practical activities timetabled and assessed within the approved centre. They will cover all learning outcomes specified in the unit.  

Six Mandatory units:

1. Soil testing (1 credit)
2. Sowing seeds and vegetative propagation techniques (2 credits)
3. Practical skills in ground preparation for seeding and planting (2 credits)
4. Practical skills in establishing seeds and plants in soil (2 credits)
5. Care and pruning of plants (3 credits)
6. Identification of a range of common garden plants, weeds, pests, diseases and disorders and beneficial organisms (3 credits)

Optional units:

1. Sustainable garden practice (2 credits)
2. Safe operation of powered garden machinery (2 credits)
3. Establishing, repairing and maintaining a lawn (2 credits)
4. Practical skills in vegetable growing (2 credits)
5. Practical skills in the maintenance of established soft fruit (2 credits)
6. Practical skills in the maintenance of established top fruit (2 credits)

COURSE Schedule

This is a one-year course. The course is taught 5 hours a week over 29 weeks with one visit and four assessment days.

The course follows the academic timetable, comprising three separate terms with half term breaks within each.

WHEN

Courses take place on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from September until June, starting 20, 21 & 23 September 2021. Timings 10:00 – 15:00.

COST

Tuition Fee: £675 to include annual membership for Hever Castle & Gardens for the duration of the course.

CANCELLATION POLICY

A cancellation fee of £195 will apply if you withdraw two weeks before the start of the course. After this time if you withdraw from the course there is no reimbursement of fees after the start of the course.

WHO

Our four tutors have taught horticulture, including the RHS courses, for many years and have worked in various sectors of the horticultural industry. They are all passionate about plants and love to share their enthusiasm with others. They are thrilled to be offering horticulture courses in the beautiful and inspiring setting of Hever Castle with its splendid plant collection.

RHS LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA IN THE PRINCiPLES & PRACTICES OF HORTICULTURE (43 CREDITS)

RHS Level 2 theory-based qualifications:

• RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance (14 credits)
• RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation and Development (14 credits)

RHS Level 2 practical-based qualification:

• RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture (15 credits)

Those who successfully complete all the necessary units for the two level 2 theory-based qualifications and the practical-based qualification will gain the RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles of Horticulture (total 43 credits, which equates to 430 learning hours).

The RHS Qualification Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture is well recognised within the industry. Students who achieve it are well placed to progress onto further courses, or into employment. The course is ideal for the dedicated amateur gardener who wishes to extend his or her knowledge and achieve a nationally recognised qualification. It is ideal for beginners, or for those with some experience. The Level 2 qualification is the basis to move further on to the RHS Level 3 Qualifications.

Achievement on this course is assessed with nationally set written examinations and assessments. We recommend that students take the examinations. 

There are no prerequisites for entry to the qualification other than a love of horticulture and a dedication to sit the examinations.
