Retired army veteran Major Mick Stanley has rowed across Hever Lake in his homemade boat constructed from two sheets of corrugated iron to raise money for Ukrainian refugees.
Major Mick took to the 38 acre Lake, put in by former owner William Waldorf Astor, on Wednesday 3 August in his boat, Tintanic II.
Dressed in a Union Jack suit to mark the Jubilee year, Major Mick rowed across the Lake and Sixteen Acre Island to raise money for charity, Children on the Edge.
The fundraising challenge has seen him row in Chichester, Beaulieu River in the New Forest, Regent’s Canal in London, The Serpentine in London and across the Solent to The Isle of Wight.
He has undertaken two previous fundraising adventures covering a total of 200 miles since the start of lockdown. This year he has completed 57 miles of the 100 miles he aims to do by Christmas.
Major Mick has previously raised £63,000 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Bosham and Alzheimer’s Research UK.
He said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my row in the Lake. The weather was perfect and the scenery from the lake was quite stunning. I will be returning at a later date to spend more time looking at the Castle and grounds.”
