Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn provides the stunning location for a gripping new BBC series starting on Friday 13 August at 9pm.
The three part BBC Two series entitled The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family focuses on the rise to power of one of the most powerful Tudor families, the Boleyns.
Castle Historian & Assistant Curator Dr Owen Emmerson was interviewed for the BBC Boleyn programme, and scenes filmed in the Castle include the Inner Hall, Long Gallery and King Henry VIII’s bedchamber.
Two horses were also filmed on location on the drawbridge at Hever Castle for The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family, the first time since 1969 when the Oscar winning film Anne of the Thousand Days was filmed at Hever Castle.
Owen said: “This is a very different telling of the Boleyn’s story than anything that has been produced on screen to date. It is driven from primary sources which help us to see a much more complex and sympathetic picture of the Boleyn’s story.”
Hever Castle is a popular location for Tudor history documentaries and dramas as it was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. It is also believed to be where Anne, the mother of Elizabeth I, was courted by Henry VIII and later went on to become his second wife.
A crew from BBC Studios filmed at Hever Castle for the BBC Boleyn programme in February and in April.
Nearby Penshurst Place was among other locations used for the BBC Boleyn programme.
Hever Castle held an exhibition in 2019 showcasing some of the TV programmes and films which used the historic attraction as a backdrop.
Two dresses from the film Anne of the Thousand Days and a sword dredged from the moat after filming for The Passionate Pilgrim starring Eric Morecambe and Tom Baker were among the items on display.
