HEVER’S HOME FRONT – JUNE 24 – 25
Step back in time and experience a taste of wartime Britain at Hever’s Home Front in this 1940s event.
To mark Armed Forces Day, re-enactors will be demonstrating what it would have been like to live and work in the countryside during the 1940s.
Experience unique living history from the Home Front in a classic double decker bus containing reconstructions of a 1940s living room, shop, bombed out street and air raid shelter replicating the sights and sounds of the time.
Move 1940s style with a swing dance in the tea dance tent, listen to the Sweetheart Swing duet or visit the stalls selling vintage wares and refreshments.
Get into the nostalgic spirit by dressing up in period costume with prizes for the best dressed visitors. Finish off your outfit with a trip to our 1940s salon for a fitting do.
Meet Winston Churchill and enjoy displays of period model boats on the Moat or have a selfie with a grounded life-size model Hurricane or a ¾ size model Spitfire.
WWII Encampment, 10:30 – 17:30: 23rd Sussex Home Guard re-enactment and encampment displays.
RAF 212 Squadron, 10:30 – 17:00: Battle of Britain operations room re-enactment, with drill parades and inspections. Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAFs), Senior Officers, Sentries and Pilots scramble into full flying kit that includes authentic uniforms and equipment.
Life-Size Model Hurricane & 3/4 Size Model Spitfire, 10:30 – 17:30: take your photo next to one of our WWII model aircraft in the grounds, suggest donation 50p to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA).
Bayonet Run & Home Guard Drills, various times throughout the day.
Home Front Bus, 11:00 – 17:00: a unique living history experience inside a classic double-decker bus. Reconstructions of a 1940s living room, shop, bombed out street and air raid shelter, containing period features and artefacts which replicate the sights, sounds and smells of the Home Front.
Children’s Evacuee For A Day Workshop, 11:00 – 17:00: make a gas mask box, tie on your name label and find out what it would have been like for a child to be an evacuee in this free workshop.
Winston Churchill Address, 14:30: a 20 minute wartime speech from the Prime Minister of the period.
WWII Sandbag Barricades & Heavy Weapons, 11:00 – 17:00.
Vintage Pram Display, 11:00 – 17:00: pram owners in 1940s costumes pushing vintage prams.
WWII Model Boats, 11:00 – 17:00: Kent Model Boat Display Team provides displaying boats to the public.
Stately Homes During WWII, 11:30 – 17:00: learn how stately homes were used during the war and what it was like to live in one.
Dance & Swing Tent, 11:00 – 17:00: why not join in the social dance on the dance floor, learn the steps in dance classes or just enjoy the music from our 1940s DJs and the Sweetheart Swing duet.
Best Dressed Competition, 11:00 – 17:00: enter our best dressed competition.
Vintage Stalls & Refreshments, 11:00 – 17:00: a small selection of stalls selling vintage clothes, homewares and refreshments.
Tea Tent, 11:00 – 17:00: tea, cake and afternoon teas.
Vintage Hair Salon and Barber Shop, 11:00 – 17:00: ladies’ victory rolls £5.00, gents’ haircuts £7.00.
Military Museum Tours, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00
Self Assemble Model WW2 Military Vehicle, 11:00 – 17:00: taking place in the Military Museum, subject to availability.
Daily Talks in the Think Tank, 15:00: Saturday – Operation Crusader in 1941 Battles of the Desert Rats; Sunday – The Air Raid Shelters of the Home Front in WW2.
