Head Gardener’s National Gardening Week Tips

As part of National Gardening Week, we spoke to Hever Castle Head Gardener, Neil Miller, to get his top tips for what to do in the gardens at this time of the year.

Gardening Tips

• Now is the time to buy plants for your summer bedding displays. Buying them from the garden centre as plug plants now means they will be so much cheaper than if you wait until June/July when they are full size. You are also likely to have more choice now.
• Once you’ve purchased these plants, pot them on but don’t put outside until certain that all frosts are gone.
• Prune your Camellias once they have finished flowering, to promote great displays the following year.
• Feed all your yew and box hedging with chicken manure, which is high in Nitrogen. You should notice lush, fresh green growth within a few weeks.
• Spring clean borders, keeping on top of weeding and hoeing.
• Feed, treat moss and weed patches on lawns, and start to regularly mow lawns once a week.
