Join RHS Approved horticultural tutor Caroline (and her faithful dog Tye) on a journey of discovery from the ground up.
Learn about perennials, plant selection and biodiversity in the garden in the magical grounds of Hever Castle; a picturesque and inspiring classroom, brimming with mature plant specimens unique to these historically important gardens.
Each week will focus on a different topic, taking you on a magical walk around the grounds to explore seasonal plants and link them to the week’s theme. From the classification of plants to the intricacies of soil environments and garden habitats, you will gain valuable insights while enjoying the beauty and tranquility of Hever Castle & Gardens.
The day begins at 10am with an exploration of the theory behind each topic, providing a solid foundation for your horticultural knowledge. Following this, a guided walk through the gardens will reinforce the morning’s learning, offering a relaxed and immersive experience that connects planting designs to the castle’s rich history.
We encourage students to bring a packed lunch or make use of the onsite facilities.
In the afternoon, we will adopt a hands-on approach to learning through practical exercises such as taking cuttings, dividing plants, or crafting small hibernacles to take home. This blend of theory and practice ensures a comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience.
Our flexible approach allows us to adapt to the weather and seize seasonal opportunities within the gardens.

The tutors have taught horticulture, including the RHS courses, for many years and have worked in various sectors of the horticultural industry. They are all passionate about plants and love to share their enthusiasm with others. They are thrilled to be offering horticulture courses in the beautiful and inspiring setting of Hever Castle with its splendid plant collection.
Each week will include a practical session and an educated walk round the gardens.
Topics:
Week 1: Highlight on hardy perennials
• Theory: Classification and naming of plants, herbaceous and woody perennials, growth habits (ground cover, climbers and shrubs). Pruning strategies
• Practical: Divide or take cuttings of herbaceous perennials.
Week 2: Focus on tender plants
• Theory: Uses and methods of over-wintering, the importance of soil and the growing environment. Annuals treated as perennials.
• Practical: Take cuttings or fill a hanging basket or large pot.
Week 3: Biodiversity in the garden
• Theory: Importance of the soil environment
Plants for specific insect populations, colour and flower shape. The lawn; to mow or not to mow? Getting the balance right; attracting pollinators and predators.
• Practical: Make a hibernacle.
Week 4: Plant selection (focus on resilient plants)
• Theory: Impact of climate change. Right plant, right place. A look at some good books. Plant adaptations
• Practical: Create a planting plan for a specific aspect and soil conditions.
Tuition Fee: £300 per course
A cancellation fee of £100 will apply if you withdraw two weeks before the start of the course. After this time if you withdraw from the course there is no reimbursement of fees after the start of the course.

Hever Castle has played host to many important events and celebrations for over 600 years. In 1903 when William Waldorf Astor set about restoring Hever Castle to its former glory, he added the Astor Wing, to accommodate his family and guests, before creating a lake and the spectacular Italian Garden to house his impressive collection of ancient Greek and Roman statuary.

Set in the mature grounds of the Hever Castle Estate, Hever Castle Golf Club is a 27 hole Kent golf course that will encourage and inspire all golf enthusiasts.
