What’s on in October
October – perhaps the best time of year to see Hever Castle with the glowing autumn colour. The Boston ivy which adorns its walls goes through a dramatic and dazzling transformation this month as the leaves slowly turn a deep brooding red. Acers, oaks and ironwood trees light up the skies with magenta, yellow and fuschia leaves. The crisp autumn air will have you feeling totally immersed in the season, so have some fun, pop on your welly boots and kick up the fallen leaves!
With the nights drawing in, grab a pen and paper and start planning an autumn to remember, and with the festive season just around the corner – you can start planning an outing to Christmas at Hever Castle too.

The summer perennials may have faded, but the riot of colour in the grounds has only just started. Across the grounds, shades of orange, magenta, and yellow hypnotise at every turn. Be dazzled by the vibrant tones of acers, whilst the historic Chestnut Avenue will have you feeling fully absorbed by autumn’s beauty.
It’s the season to enjoy the tumble of leaves from the trees, early morning mists and mellow fruitfulness. So pack your walking shoes and head for Hever this autumn for a day to remember.

The Autumn Colour event this year features a new self-guided trail around the lake incorporating points of interest including World War II Pillboxes, the waterfall, the impressive Japanese Teahouse and a vast list of autumnal coloured trees.

Double, double, toil, and trouble! Once again this October half term (20 to 28 October), Hever Castle will be cast under the bewitching dark spell of Halloween. With cobwebs in every corner and ghosts hiding in the cupboards, witches and wizards unite this half term to marvel in the magic!
Listen to ghostly tales in the Ghost Catcher’s Lair, follow the pumpkin trail in the grounds and get spooked learning about the ghosts of Hever in the Castle. Create a ghost puppet in a free creepy craft workshop or decorate a ghoulish biscuit* (*small additional charge). Plus with prizes for the scariest costumes, a visit to Hever Castle is sure to be spine-tingling fun for all the family.
This year, Christmas at Hever Castle is all about Traditional Christmas Tales. During the day you will be met with beautifully decorated Castle rooms, welcoming log fires and twinkling Christmas trees celebrating traditional Christmas tales. Outside in the grounds discover the festive trail themed around the Charles Dickens classic novel ‘A Christmas Carol’ and wander through the illuminated gardens as dusk falls.
For a magical after dark experience, wrap up warm and enjoy a walk under the stars at Twilight Christmas, last remaining Twilight tickets available. Witness the enchantment of the Castle and gardens festooned with fabulous colours and twinkling lights, capturing the spirit of Christmas.
Please note that pre-booked Father Christmas is SOLD OUT, but drop-in is available on many dates.

A permanent exhibition in the Long Gallery, guest curated by renowned historian David Starkey, is now open to the public. Through 18 original portraits hung in dynastic order, the story of the Tudors will be told starting from Henry VI and ending with Henry VIII.
Dr Starkey’s attention to detail and demand for historical accuracy has seen the ornate plaster work adorning the Long Gallery’s ceiling painted a softer off-white to give the effect of lime wash and full-length drapes have been reinstalled at the large stained-glass windows situated at each end of the 98ft (30m) room.
Visitors will also have a chance to see items not previously on display. These include a portrait of Elizabeth Woodville, the grandmother of Henry VIII, who was an influential figure in ending the Wars of the Roses and thus the start of the Tudor dynasty. It is on public display for the first time ever. The painting is thought to have been owned by the same family for 400 years, so it has never been seen in public and is a brand-new addition to the list of known portraits of Elizabeth Woodville.
