What’s on in October
October – perhaps the best time of year to see Hever Castle with the glowing autumn colour. The Boston ivy which adorns its walls goes through a dramatic and dazzling transformation this month as the leaves slowly turn a deep brooding red. Acers, oaks and ironwood trees light up the skies with magenta, yellow and fuschia leaves. The crisp autumn air will have you feeling totally immersed in the season, so have some fun, pop on your welly boots and kick up the fallen leaves!
With the nights drawing in, grab a pen and paper and start planning an autumn to remember, and with the festive season just around the corner – you can start planning an outing to Christmas at Hever Castle too.

Go straight to Christmas at Hever Castle
As the air turns crisp and a rich display of autumn colour envelops the countryside; pack your wellies and head to Hever Castle. Enjoy the crunch of leaves underfoot and spectacular autumn hues.
The summer perennials may have faded, but the riot of colour in the grounds has only just started. Across the grounds, shades of orange, magenta, and yellow hypnotise at every turn. Be dazzled by the vibrant tones of acers, whilst the historic Chestnut Avenue will have you feeling fully absorbed by autumn’s beauty.
It’s the season to enjoy the tumble of leaves from the trees, early morning mists and mellow fruitfulness. So pack your walking shoes and head for Hever this autumn for a day to remember.
This autumn, the gardening team will be helping you learn how to salvage, dry and store seeds, passing on the essential skill of seed collecting. The Garden Exhibition will house examples of the seeds collected by the gardeners from the gardens at Hever.
There will also be free garden tours of Faith’s Garden providing information about seed collecting. These will take place at 11:30am on Tuesday and Wednesdays throughout October (with the exception of the Halloween Event).
Plus your little ones will be able to take on the Leaf & Seed Collection Challenge. If they collect different seeds and leaves from Anne Boleyn’s Walk and Lake Walk, they will be given a bulb to take home and plant.
Prepare to be spooked this Halloween at Haunted Hever. For autumn half term we have a vast array of spook-tacular events on at the Castle for you and your little ones.
Join the spooky storytelling, take part in the Halloween craft activity, follow the scarecrow scavenger hunt around the grounds and sink your teeth into a sweet treat at the deadly delicious biscuit decorating workshop* (*small additional charge).
Don your scariest outfit to take part in the fancy dress costume (with prizes for the best dressed) and finish your spooky creation off with a freakish facepaint* (*small additional charge).
Step into the Castle and let your little ones find the hidden bats. Meanwhile you will have the chance to read up on gruesome Victorian tales!
This Christmas we will be taking you on a magical journey down the rabbit hole and into the enchanting world of Alice in Wonderland. During the day you will be met with beautifully decorated Castle rooms, welcoming log fires and twinkling Christmas trees.
Outside in the grounds follow the whimsical Alice in a Christmas Wonderland themed interactive trail and wander through the illuminated gardens as dusk falls.
For a magical after dark experience, wrap up warm and enjoy a walk under the stars at Twilight Christmas. Witness the enchantment of the Castle and gardens festooned with fabulous colours and twinkling lights, capturing the spirit of Christmas.
A late 16th century portrait of Richard III is now on display at Hever Castle for the first time – 567 years to the day he was born.
This late Tudor portrait of the monarch is an example of the only painted portrait-type of Richard, best known from a 16th century panel in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. The portrait-type probably derives from a now lost original that was painted from life.
Whilst you are in the Castle make sure you check out the Stage & Screen exhibition in the Moat Room. Two dresses from the film Anne of the Thousand Days, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and a sword dredged from the moat after filming for The Passionate Pilgrim starring Eric Morecambe and Tom Baker, will be among the items on display.
